How I Took Back Control of My Bank Account (and My Confidence)
I used to avoid checking my bank statements.
Every time I opened my banking app, I’d get that sinking feeling—what now? Then I started noticing tiny little payments I didn’t remember agreeing to. £7.99 here, £4.99 there. And it hit me…
I was spending £50+ a month on things I didn’t even use.
Gym memberships I forgot about. Free trials that silently turned into paid plans. Music apps, recipe subscriptions, beauty boxes, cloud storage—I was haemorrhaging cash and didn’t even realise it.
And when you’re trying to rebuild your life after financial trauma or a toxic relationship, that kind of waste isn’t just frustrating—it’s disempowering.
So I took action.
Step One: Awareness
I downloaded an app called Emma. (You can also use Snoop, Money Dashboard, or check through your banking app.) It showed me every single subscription I had—and how much they were costing me each month.
I was shocked.
But also? I felt like I’d finally opened my eyes.
Step Two: Unsubscribe Like a Queen
I cancelled:
In one afternoon, I saved myself over £600 a year.
That’s money I now put toward food, fuel, or even little treats for the kids. Things that actually matter.
Why This Hack Matters
In abusive relationships, control over money is often stripped away. Gaining it back starts with awareness. Tracking your spending isn’t just a budgeting tool—it’s a confidence-builder.
Every subscription I cancelled felt like me saying: “I decide now. I’m in control.”
